About the College
Bhangar Mahavidyalaya is a Degree college for higher education, situated in Bhangar I block, Bhangar P.S., Baruipur sub-division under South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. There were no nearby colleges in the surrounding area for a long time and so this area was deprived of any institution of higher learning for a long time. The establishment of Bhangar Mahavidyalaya somewhat succeeded in filling in the vacuum and a vast multitude of young learners got the chance to go in for higher studies.
Bhangar Mahavidyalaya owes its existence to a local Non-Government Organization (Bhangar Unnayanee) where the leadership was provided by Abdur Rezzak Molla for establishing a Degree college in Bhangar. The initiative started in 1995 and the foundation stone was laid in 1996. The land was donated by the Irrigation Department, Government of West Bengal through Bhangar I Panchayet Samity. The college got affiliated to the University of Calcutta to impart teaching in Arts, Social Science and Commerce. New Science subjects such as Chemistry and Physics (General course) have been introduced recently along with Honours in Mathematics and Sanskrit.
Special mention has to be made about the academic environment of this locality within the minority (Muslim) and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribe Communities. Bereft of any opportunity to undertake higher education till the establishment of this college, a large number of students from these communities ventured to take up the challenge in an area where an overwhelming majority of students from all sections have been the the first generation learners in the domain of higher education.
ABOUT THE LIBRARY
Bhangar College library is the heart and soul of Bhangar Mahavidyalaya. It serves as the centre of academic activities for students, scholars and faculty members in the pursuit of excellence in their respective area of academic pursuits.
The journey began with a small almirah in 1997-98 after which a small 500 square feet room was allotted. With the passage of time, it continued to grow in all dimensions and now it is housed in an area of 4000 square feet.
The library has a collection of over 32,000 books, 11 journal titles and a number of magazines at present. Access to online journals and bibliographic databases is provided to the faculty members through the N-LIST (a project funded by the MHRD through INFLIBNET). Internet access from the library is available with a small number of computers for staff and students for searching digitized catalogues. It has a separate reading room with seating capacity of 100 students at a time. It has also Career Counselling Corner with books and magazines related to employment to guide and inspire students. It provides Web OPAC service for accessing bibliographic database of the library to all.
